JENNA'S DIARY 2006- 2007
Started
bringing her weight down 10th September 2006. Held back on the amount
of food she had the previous week to get her to come to me in the aviary. This
is our 5th year so she is very tame with me. She was 2lb 13oz when I
first pulled her out, Her hunting weight was 2lb 3oz at the end of
last year.
Until her weight comes down she will be fed 2oz of rabbit with vitamins every 3 days and she will have to do jump ups for the food to build up her fitness.

Her weight was 2lb 13oz. Did 20 jump ups for about 2oz of food, she was a bit nervous coming at first. I only shown her the food until she was confident coming to me, the rest was hidden in my glove.

Her weight was 2lb 7.8oz. Did 90 Jump ups for 2oz of food, panting after about 35. It's been hot all week could do with some cold nights to speed up the weight loss.

Her weight was 2lb 6.8oz. Went lamping with Paul and his .22 bullet gun at cow sheds. Took Jenna for a manning session. Only saw a couple of rabbits. Birds first time out, she was nervous of everything at first but quickly settled down. Flew to me 5 times about 30 foot instantly for about 1/2 oz of rabbit.
I'm going to feed her 1oz every other day to see if her weight will come down quicker. I think her body might be shutting down after a couple of days with no food to conserve energy. Smaller amounts of food more regular might help to reduce her weight quicker. We'll see what happens.

Her weight was 2lb 6.4oz. Went for a quick lamp with Charlie down golf coarse track. Jenna flew at the three rabbits we saw but only about 75% effort, she came back to me instantly. She completely ignored 3 hares sat together. Started to rain on the way back to the car. Went home and did 70 jump ups for about 1oz of rabbit. She was panting after about 15 probable because of the extra weight as she was wet.

Her weight was 2lb 6.4oz. Went lamping with Lesley to Thomas's fields. Jenna flew at the first rabbits missed and re-chased it, but it went into the bushes before she got there .The 2nd was 80 yards off, by the time she got there it had gone into the brambles. She got the third one to Lesley's horror as it hopped into the bracken. She let me break in with out any problems fed her heart lungs and liver and then a front leg as we walk back to the car. I'm very surprised at her response at this weight.

Her weight was 2lb 6.9oz. Went lamping to Island and river it had rained hard all day after a couple of flights Jenna was soaked. Had about 12 chases, she slammed into cover twice but the rest were about 75% effort. Good exercise for her, she was really tired on the way home and started to ignoring rabbits. Fed 0.8oz of rabbit calling her back to the fist. Lots of rabbits about.

Her weight was 2lb 5.9oz. Went to Whitechaple with Paul and his new bird ferreting. First time out in the day Jenna's response to me was terrible. With the lamp she can only see what the lamp shines on usually a rabbit or my fist. There was too much going on she was having a good look around and ignoring me when I was calling her to the fist. She only had 1 flight at a rabbit but she really tried. Got a rabbit with my ferret. Didn't feed her up on it she still needs to come down. only had about an ounce of food and some rabbit fur to clean out her crop.
Paul's birds first time out to. She did really well following on and caught a rabbit. She's was a bit aggressive on the kill and needs a bit of work to gain his trust, she thinks your going to rob her all the time. Ferreted all day only bolted 2, mixy carcases and buzzards every were.

Her weight was 2lb 5.5oz. Went to river lamping. Jenna flew at 4 rabbits but wasn't very keen only about 60% effort. Didn't see many rabbits it was a clear night and almost a full moon. Saw a fox where the rabbits normally are. Fed just under an ounce of chick.

Her weight was 2lb 5.0oz. Did 100 Jump ups for 1oz of rabbit then manned her for 1/2 an hour on the glove.

Her weight was 2lb 4.1oz. Went lamping to Thomas's fields and island. Almost clear sky and no wind struggled to get good slips. Had half a dozen flights at rabbits, 85% effort. Caught one just before we got back to the car which was sat out in the middle of the field. Fed the organs and a chick, she weighed 2lb 6.7oz when we got home.

Her weight was 2lb 4.0oz. Went lamping to Shrimps with Susan. Almost clear sky no moon and no wind. Didn't see that many rabbits. Had 8 flights at rabbits, 90% effort. Caught 3 and let go of another. Fed her up on the third and called it a night, she weighed 2lb 6.5oz when we got home. She wasn't coming back to me instantly for some reason.

Her weight was 2lb 4.2oz. Went lamping to Carform with Dan. Cloudy with slight wind. Didn't see many rabbits 3 foxes knocking about. Had 8 short flights at rabbits, 90% effort at the ones she went for, ignored a few. Caught 2. Fed her up on the heart and lungs only as her weight is still too high. She was coming back to me instantly this time.

Her weight was 2lb 4.0oz. Went lamping to Shrimps with Ian & Charlie. Almost clear sky no moon and slight wind. Had about 10 flights at rabbits, 100% effort. Caught 3 and was very unlucky with another 3. Jenna was slamming into cover and every rabbit she missed, she re-chased and re-chased until they had gone. Fed her up on a rabbit she caught as we got back to the car. She weighed 2lb 6.1oz when we got home.
Had a look in the marine lake with the lamp, saw a lot of eels and flat fish. Ian speared a flatty with a metal rod he found for his supper.

Her weight was 2lb 3.5oz. Went to Lennon's with Alf. Clear sky no moon and slight wind. First time there this year. Rabbit were at the far end this year by the time we got there the battery was going flat. Had about 6 long flights about 100-120 meters, she was tired when she got up to them and wasn't keen re-chasing. She only had tip bits.

Her weight was 2lb 3.5oz. Went to Hayland with Paul ferreting. Warn sunny day. Second time out in the day, this time Jenna's response was spot on and she followed on fine. Only bolted 1 rabbit, Jenna nail it after an 50 yard chase. Fed her up on it as we got back to the car. Gave her some rabbit fur to clean out her crop when we got home.
Bolted a couple for Paul's birds but she was unlucky the rabbits where going in and out of the holes. Had one good flight across the field but she missed it and went in a tree sulking.
There's too much cover yet for ferreting a lot of rabbits are in the hedges and thick cover. Jenna was crashing in at them but it was too thick to get close enough.

Her weight was 2lb 2oz. Went to shrimps with Alf. No wind at all, clear sky -4deg and almost a full moon. I couldn't have picked a worse night. Every close Rabbit we saw were on their holes, as soon as Jenna took off they where gone. Managed to get a 3/4 grown which didn't know any better. Had a few really long chases as we couldn't get close. Gave her a full crop as her weight is a bit too low, its been cold all week.

Bonfire night tomorrow, pointless going lamping this weekend with all the fire works going off. Skies clear its a full moon and there's no wind. Fed her 2 chick heads, I will go for a walk around Raymond's tomorrow.

Her weight was 2lb 2.8oz. Went to Raymond's with Susan. Had a walk around for an hour she was following on fine and coming instantly. She flew at a moorhen but it dived under the water as she got to it. didn't see any thing else.

Her weight was 2lb 2.4oz. Went to bumpy road lamping with Pete and Nigel. Slight wind and cloudy. Got 4 rabbits and was unlucky with a couple. Ended up with a foot full of partridge feathers as she slammed into one on the way to a rabbit, some how it managed to get away. Jenna's response was perfect. Gave her a full crop on the 4th rabbit.

Her weight was 2lb 2.8oz. Went to Island and Tomas's field. No wind clear sky 3/4 moon. Got 1 rabbit with mixy had 1other chase. Only saw them two, last time I went there it was lifting with rabbits. Jenna ended up in the stream after a coot. Lost the aerial off my transmitter. Fed her a full crop off the rabbit she caught. Dried her off with the hairdryer when we got home.

Her weight was 2lb 2.0oz. Went to bumpy road lamping with Susan. Windy and light rain. Got 2 rabbits and had hold of another 3 times before it went down a hole. Jenna didn't seem to have the energy she went for every rabbit and was re-chashing but she seemed to be struggling, her weight was a bit low and she hasn't had food for a few days. Gave her a full crop on the 2nd rabbit.

Her weight was 2lb 3.2oz. Went lamping to Carform with Alf and Charlie. Cloudy, windy and raining. Didn't see many rabbits at all. Had 5 short flights ignored a few as she was wet. Caught 1. Fed her up on it as she wont be flown until Monday.

Her weight was 2lb 3.4oz. Went on Billy's farm with Paul. Gale force wind. Jenna flew at a crow and was blown down wind, I had to get the telemetry out to find her. Found her 40 mins later 3 miles away on a duck in a pen in a ladies back yard. Jenna had killed it and had eaten half a crop. The Lady was very upset. Cost me £20. Paul's bird got a rabbit and we dug one which the ferret had caught.

Her weight was 2lb 3.4oz. Went to Billy's wood again. Still very windy. Jenna chased 2 and got the 3rd, fed her the heart and lungs. Put her away and gave Paul's bird a fly. She had a couple of chases and nailed one after being blow into a tree. Ferret caught 1, didn't need to dig it out as it was by a hole. Not many rabbits about.

Her weight was 2lb 3.2oz. Rained heavy all day, stopped later on so we went lamping on Dave's field . Jenna caught the first one she chased. The grass was so long and wet that after the first rabbit she was soaking and struggled flying. She had a few more chases though.

Deer stalking all day, Paul got his first Red deer. It rained hard most of the day. I didn't get a chance to shoot. Paul is doing his DSC2. Went out with Dave at night shooting foxes with the lamp and bullet gun. It was gale force wind, Dave managed to get 2 foxes out of 5.

Deer Stalking again all day Paul got a spiker Red deer in the morning and I got one in the afternoon before it started to rain. Rained all night so I didn't go lamping with Jenna.

Went beating for the farmers who's land we were hunting on. The total at the end of the day was 96 Pheasants and 1 Wood Cock. Travelled home on the Sunday.

Her weight was 2lb 3.2.oz. Went to bumpy road lamping with spud. Slight wind, there had been showers all day but it was dry as we lamped. Got 2 easy rabbits and had hold of the third which gave her a hard time. It somersaulted while Jenna had hold of it. She ignored a couple after that. Jenna caught one just before we got back to the car, fed her up on it.

Her weight was 2lb 4.2oz. Went to bumpy road lamping with our John. Very windy. Got 3 rabbits, for some reason getting her off the rabbits wasn't as quick and easy as normal, not as keen to get the chicks leg, her weight is a bit high. Fed her up on one she caught as we got back to the car.

Her weight was 2lb 3.5oz. Went to Shrimps lamping. Still gale force wind but it was dry so I thought I would give it a go. It was really hard work, I had to walk with my back to the wind with Jenna tucked tight into my chest to shelter her. When she flew into the wind after rabbits she was pumping hard and getting no were. When she was flying with the wind the wind was controlling were she was going and the speed was frightening. Went and picked her up instead of calling her to the fist. Didn't get anything on this occasion but at least we got out for an hour. Fed her about 2 chicks

Her weight was 2lb 3.7oz. Went to bumpy road lamping. Went on both sides, a lot of rabbits behind the vans. First break in the weather for over a week, still windy and cloudy . Got 5 rabbits and missed about the same due to the long grass, as she missed first time around she struggled getting through it. Jenna flew at a fox momentarily which we startled 25 yards off, heart stopping moment. Gave her a full crop on the fifth. The telemetry came off on the 5th rabbit somehow, had to go back for it after putting Jenna in the car.

Her weight was 2lb 4.3oz. Went to bumpy road lamping. Went on both sides. Dry clear night, suppose to be half moon but it must be low in the sky as it was pitch black, gale force winds again . Had 3 chases got 3 rabbits not many about. Gave her a small feed on the 3rd as her weight is a bit high, hard getting her off the rabbits at this weight, same as 30th Nov.
Gave her tip bits as she was sat on the glove instead of when she comes back to me because lately she has been flying away expecting to get a tip bit when she fly's back . Seemed to work she only bated off once

Her weight was 2lb 3.2oz. Went to bumpy road lamping with Spud & Bud. Rained all day whether forecast said it would stop before 8, it only stopped after 9.30 Jenna was wet and noisy when flying, as she got up to the rabbits they bolted at the last second and she struggled re- chasing. When it stopped raining the wind dropped to nothing. 3 men walking around is noisy, didn't see many after the rain had stopped. Got 1 rabbits and missed about 8 she got hold of a couple but couldn't keep hold . Not a good night. Gave her a full crop on the one she caught.

Her weight was 2lb 3.7oz. Went to Lennon's lamping. No wind at all cloudy and chilly, very wet under foot due to the down pours over the last 3 weeks. Didn't get any easy slips saw about 5 rabbits all night and every one was sat next to the hedge. As she flew at a rabbit a wisp of Snipe got up in front of her, she caught one in the air. Only gave her tip bits.

Her weight was 2lb 3.oz. Went to Shrimps lamping. No wind at all clear sky and chilly, a very dark night. Jenna missed the first rabbit as it jumped over a large puddle. Jenna ended up in the puddle and was soaked, great start! She missed a couple after that before catching a couple of easy ones. She caught a third but it put up a good fight and managed to get away before I got there. Jenna must have got a bad kick, she was limping a bit after it. She wasn't very keen to chase any more. Feed her up on one of the rabbits she caught. Saw plenty of rabbits. She was a bit muddy from when we went to Lennon's so I put her bath in her aviary. Couldn't tell if feeding her yesterday gave her more energy.

Her weight was 2lb 3.7oz. Went to bumpy road lamping. No wind, dark night. Only had 1 chase in about 40 minutes went to the other side of the road behind the vans after about 20 minutes she caught another which I feed her up on. I didn't think we see any more so I also fed her its back leg on the long walk back to the car. Just before we got back to the car I put the lamp on and saw a rabbit to my amazement Jenna set off after it with a full crop. She missed it twice but carried on chasing until she caught it. I gave her nearly all the titbits I had left. She then chased another as we got to the car but it went down a hole just before Jenna got there.
Jenna had 4 chases and caught 3 rabbits. Only saw 5 rabbits all night.

Her weight was 2lb 4.7oz. Went to Raymond's ferreting with Alf. There was a slight breeze. She was following us down a line of trees and dropped on a pheasant. The pheasant flew off leaving her gripping a pile of feathers. She then followed it to a thick wood. I walked to the wood and struggled to get her back on the fist. After I had got her and was walking back to Alf who was stood at the holes ready to put the ferret in Jenna flew back into the line of trees and would not come to us at all. After about 5 minutes she dropped on another pheasant and the same thing happened again it flew off into the thick wood. This happened 4 times in total. We then started ferreting, we bolted about 6 rabbits in a thick hawthorn wood but each time Jenna was in the wrong place and couldn't get through the wood in time. Her weight was to high.

Her weight was 2lb 3.5oz. Went to bumpy road lamping with Susan. Very windy and a bright night due to the nearly full moon. We went a couple of hours later this time, didn't make that much difference we saw about the same amount of rabbits. We got 4 rabbits but Jenna should have had 6. We got back to the car after the 3rd rabbit. I walked in to a small field to feed her up on a rabbit she had caught from my bag. As I put the lamp on there was a rabbit creeping back to the wood and she caught it, so I fed her up on that. Fed her some liver on Friday morning.

Her weight was 2lb 3.4oz. Went to Shrimps lamping . 8mph wind and a full moon. Rabbits everywhere. We had a lot of hard chases managed to get 2 rabbits. For some reason as the night went on she was ignoring a lot maybe due to tiredness as each chase was straight after each other, normally she gets a good break between chases. It has also been very warm for this time of year maybe a drop in her weight would make her a bit keener. Only fed her up on about 2oz of chick.

Her weight was 2lb 3.0oz. Went to Shrimps lamping with Paul and Mike . 12mph wind and a full moon. Rabbits everywhere, it was noisy due to the sea coming in, this covered our noise. We had a lots of easy chases we where getting right up to the rabbits before they new we were there. Jenna caught 6 and had hold of 2 more which managed to get away. Fed her up on a rabbit she had caught as we got back to the car

Her weight was 2lb 3.7oz. Went to Carform lamping went to the part behind the car park, first time I have been around that side. 10mph wind. We must of had 20 good chases and every one of them Jenna should have caught. She would slam in but the rabbits would manage to get away. Each time she would re-chase it until the rabbit had gone. I don't know if feeding her yesterday took that slight edge off her or weather it was just down to the night. I don't think her weight was to high as she was re-chasing well. She managed to get one.

Her weight was 2lb 3.2oz. Went to Lennon's lamping as the forecast for Thursday and onwards is bad. It was quite windy and chilly. Jenna had 3 long chases and slammed into cover hard each time , but she was unable to catch any. Most of the crops are out and the fields are just soil. Fed her up on tip bits I had in my bag. Squeaked two foxes in, they stopped about 40 yards off.

I was about to get ready to go hunting and the heavens opened. I fed Jenna the 2 chicks I had lifted out.

Her weight was 2lb 2.5oz. Wednesday would of been a better day to fly her as she wouldn't of had any food for a day, the gap seems to make her more keen. Went to Carform lamping as the forecast for Wednesday and onwards is bad, 70MPH winds. It was quite windy and very dark, it had rained all day and after a couple of chases Jenna was a bit wet. Didn't see very many rabbits it was like a different place to Tue 9th. Jenna caught 2 and had about 5 chases. She ignored a squatter which was 10 yards from us and just watched it as it ran off?. Fed her up on a rabbit she had caught.

Her weight was 2lb 3.7oz. First good night to fly for nearly a week. Went to bumpy road lamping with Susan. Fairly windy about 10 mph. Very dark night, clear sky but the moon has almost gone. It was freezing cold, the ground was rock hard and noisy. Only saw two rabbits on the house side got one of them. Didn't see anymore until we got behind the houses where she got another and missed 2 easy ones. Saw more rabbits on the side behind the caravan site. Jenna had a long flight and caught one just before it went down a hole. She caught another as we walked back to the car which I fed her up on. She seems to be put off if a squatter is facing us, if they have their back to us she will chase straight away?

Her weight was 2lb 4oz. Thought I would take advantage of the weather while I can, even though she is a bit high in weight. Went to Shrimps lamping. Not as windy, cold or as dark it was yesterday, cloudy. Didn't see that many rabbits at first and I thought its going to be one of those nights especially as it started to rain. Luckily Jenna caught one just before it started. She got two more rabbits further down than we normally go and by that time she was quite wet, and noisy as she was flying. She caught another just as we got back to the car which I fed her up on.

Her weight was 2lb 4.1oz. Went to Shrimps lamping. About 12mph wind, just starting to freezing and very dark. She caught the first one after a fifty yard flight over a deep brook, I didn't fall in this time as jumped across. The second rabbit she caught was crossing a large frozen puddle about 25 foot in diameter. As Jenna hit the rabbit the ice smashed. The rabbit dragged her to dry land before she pinned it, by that time she was soaked. I thought it was the end of my hunting trip. I went to the next field to see what was about Jenna's tail was fanned out and her wings where drooped and slightly open trying to dry off in the breeze. We saw another rabbit and Jenna went after it and caught it, she didn't keep hold of it though there was a lot of small tree stumps I think she was dragged into one. We carried on for a bit longer and she caught 3 more. She missed a lot as well as she is very noisy flying when she's wet and the rabbits know she's coming. Fed her up on one out of my bag as we got to the car.

Her weight was 2lb 5.5oz. Went to Carform lamping. Very windy, and a bright night due to the moon. Not many rabbits about, only saw a couple. The wind made it very hard to keep Jenna on the fist. She had a couple of chases then caught one. Because of the wind and her weight I decided to call it a night, fed her the heart and lungs only

Her weight was 2lb 4.7oz. Went to bumpy road lamping. A cold wind, and a bright night . Not many rabbits on the back hills. Janna caught one about a hundred yards off under a bush, by the time I got there the rabbit had gone and she was holding a log. She wouldn't let go, I think she was trying it on to see if I would trade the log for a piece of meat. No chance. She caught one soon after that, this time she kept hold of it. She grabbed hold of another 4 but didn't keep hold of them. I almost caught one as it got away from Jenna, I dived at it twice but missed. I was always a terrible goal keeper at school. At this weight she tends to grab them on there backs and gets dragged about, at 2lb 3oz she nails nearly every one around the head as she is a lot keener. Only fed her tip bits.

Her weight was 2lb 3.7oz. Went to shrimps lamping with Charlie. A cold night just starting to freeze, and a full moon clear sky, no wind at all, didn't need the lamp it was that bright. Terrible night only saw two rabbits and they were on there holes. A fox ran across us about 10 yards off us. Only fed her tip bits.

Her weight was 2lb 3.2oz. Went around Raymond in the day it was foggy last night and it give fog for the next few days . No wind and sunny. Jenna chased a Moorhen into thick brambles. Didn't see anything else. She followed on great and her response to me was instant. Only fed her tip bits. Alf took the ferret rabbiting with purse nets and got 2.

Her weight was 2lb 2.7oz. Went lamping down bumpy road it was -5 with no wind and pitch black. With the ground frozen it was very noisy as I walked. Only saw 3 rabbits and Jenna got every one around the head. Didn't see anything else. Because the night was so calm I used a yellow filter on the lamp to try and get an advantage, it didn't affect Jenna at all. Jenna flew off in a straight line over a wood, I don't know why she must have seen something she came back after a couple of minutes. gave her a good feed on one of the rabbits she caught.

Her weight was 2lb 4.2oz. Went around Raymond for a walk in the day. It was sunny, clear blue sky but windy. Jenna's response to me wasn't very good but I expected it when I saw her weight. She was still keen to hunt and caught a rabbit which was sat out. After that she flew ahead of me into the top of a high tree as I got up to it a pigeon flew out underneath her and she dropped down on it. Gave her the head and fed her tip bits I was carrying.

Her weight was 2lb 3.2oz. Went down the golf course road lamping. Dark and windy night. Saw plenty of rabbits. Jenna had about 10 flights each one was over a 100 meters. The Second before she sunk her talons into them they bolted top speed back to the hedges. Jenna couldn't catch up to them in time. Saw 4 hares sat together Jenna flew at them but had no intention of nailing one. Fed her tip bits
