Tail Mount Plectrum |
About The Tail Mount Plectrum The Tail Mount is normally fitted to the two centre deck feathers and normally holds just a bell. The one I make holds both the bell and the telemetry transmitter.
The Advantages of using a Tail Mount are :- The bell and telemetry are away from the birds feet and don’t get in the way as your bird binds to its quarry. If a leg mount bell is used, when the bird is sat on a branch or on the ground there is no leg movement and hence no noise with a tail mount the bird uses its tail to balance so it is always moving, Harris hawks are always wiggling their tails so it is easier to know where your bird is. If a leg mount transmitter is used when the bird was sat on the ground maybe on a kill the transmitter aerial will be flat across the ground this reduces the signal with a tail mount the transmitter is away from the ground.
To fit a tail plectrum I use the following :- Plectrum, Towel , Pillow, 4 cable ties, Nail file, Araldite rapid or quick drying glue, Sharp scissors, Wire cutters, Long nose pliers ,2 washing line pegs, A4 paper folded into 3rd's and super glue. The following steps demonstrate how I fit a plectrum. |
1st Cut a leather strap about 12CM long and 5mm. Punch a small hole in the centre of the strap. Slide the bell down the strap and lock it in place see picture for more details Click on the picture to enlarge |
2nd Get a competent person to cast the bird in a towel, place the bird on a pillow and hold her there until fitting is complete, make sure the birds feet grab the pillow to avoid the bird footing herself. Find the two centre deck feathers, wrap the folded A4 paper over the other feathers and hold them in position with the pegs to keep them out of the way. Click on the picture to enlarge |

3rd Cut off the fluff at the base of the 2 deck feathers. Attach 2 cable ties to each feather with the tails facing outwards. Use a nail file to scuff the feathers so the glue can make a good bond. Click on the picture to enlarge |
4th Follow the glues instructions. Put the glue onto the feathers stem about 18mm in length. Be careful not to get the glue on anything else but the shaft. Click on the picture to enlarge |
5th Push the leather straps onto the glued feather stem. make sure there is a good contact. Click on the picture to enlarge
6th Slide the Cable ties down the leather straps and tighten slightly. Click on the picture to enlarge
7th Add a small amount of extra glue to the cable ties and tighten them using the long nose pliers. Trim off the cable ties and leather straps ends. Wait for the glue to dry. Test the glue by slightly wetting your finger tips and touching the glue. When it is almost dry talc can be used to stop the glue being tacky. Remove the pegs and paper. The bird can now be released.
